Academic Varsity Letters Recognize Student Excellence

Each year Gates Chili High School awards Academic Varsity Letters at its annual banquet to recognize exceptional academic excellence. This year we had 43 students earn their Academic Varsity Letters with 65 grades of 95 and above. In addition, 20 students earned Chevron Awards for having 80 grades of 95 and above.

Quarterly report card grades are used as a basis for earning quality points. A point system is used to establish eligibility.

    Gates Chili Central School District - High School Peer Leaders Win Monroe County STOP DWI Radio PSA Contest

    Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo announced the winners of the first annual Monroe County STOP DWI High School Public Service Announcement (PSA) Radio Contest.  

    The winners taking first, second and third place are all Gates Chili High School students in Janell Bernas’ Peer Leaders class. First Place: Maya Blackwell, Kynesha Milwood, and Zionah Campbell; Second Place: Connor Hamilton, Brittany Hargrove; and Third Place: Amanda Andorka, Jessica Donath, and Azizi Sarkis.

    The contest invites local high school students to create a 30-second public service announcement about the dangers of drunk driving.

    “In our media-focused world, the STOP DWI Radio Contest provides creative opportunity for students to help lead the fight against impaired driving," said Dinolfo.

    The students each received a certificate and first place winners received $400; second place winners received $200; and third place winners received $100.  The monetary awards will benefit the work the Peer Leaders do to help in the community.

    “I told the students about the contest,” said Bernas. “We talked about what a PSA is and how to get the audience to feel what you are trying to convey.”  As a class, the students brainstormed ideas and looked at current commercials and evaluated them.

    “I gave them only a few rules,” she said.  “Elicit emotion, it can only be 30 seconds and be unique - do whatever speaks to you.”

    The students used two classes to form their group, write the PSA, and record it. Thanks to High School Computer Lab Aide Lara Giallombardo and Innovation Coach Michael Munski for assisting the students with the broadcast quality recording.

    “I am so proud of them, not just for winning, but for believe in themselves and being original,” said Bernas.  “Once they had a starting point, they never looked back.”

    All three Gates Chili Peer Leaders' winning entries will be aired on 98 PXY during STOP DWI Labor Day Crackdown taking place August 17 – September 3, 2018.

    The judging committee examined a total of twenty entries from local high school students. Each entry was judged on originality, messaging and public safety appeal.

    Gates Chili Central School District - High School Teacher’s Lofty Idea Creates a Reading Spot for Preschoolers while Building Math Skills

    About a year ago, Gates Chili High School teacher Todd Esposito had a lofty idea of having his students complete a full-size hands-on building project to reinforce their classroom math lessons in Applied Geometry.

    Esposito contacted Alfred State’s Building Trades teachers and asked if his high school students could come to the college campus and work alongside building trades students to make the math come to life by building a Literacy Loft for preschoolers.

    “I wanted my student to know how and why the math works and to apply their new skills to build something other students might need,” he said. The Applied Geometry course uses hands-on activities to teach geometry concepts. Topics that students explore include perimeter, area, volume, similar figures, transformations, constructions, right triangle trigonometry and applications, quadrilaterals, polygons, coordinate geometry, triangle congruence and conic sections.  

    While building the Literacy Loft Esposito’s students learned rise over run to build stairs, to listen and accept the ideas of others while brainstorming, how to measure angles, and how to put their new math skills to use with building tools.

    The Literacy Loft is a raised wooden platform with railings accessible by stairs and there’s a little space underneath for a cozy spot for a theatre, a kitchen set or more reading. It took a year to complete the project thanks to the hard work of the Gates Chili Applied Geometry students, Alfred State College students and their dedicated teachers Todd Esposito, and Dan Drake and Jack Jones of Alfred State. Now, it just needed a home.

    Esposito found a local preschool that could use the Literacy Loft. So together with the Director of Transportation and Facilities George English and staff from facilities, they delivered the Literacy Loft in pieces from Esposito’s classroom to the Liberty Post Stars Preschool in Gates the evening prior to the classroom installation. Each of the Applied Geometry students had a task to accomplish during the on-site re-build such as putting the railings on the loft, adding handrails and securing the stairs in place. Gates Chili Teachers Esposito, Jared Starbird, Tyrone Allison, Assistant Principal Richard Pound and Teacher Aide Maryann Gross worked with six students Johnae Junious, Leilani Thomas, John Catalano, Jr., Makayla Pizzo, Cuneyit Barut, and Xavier Mateo to get the Literacy Loft built while preschools patiently played on the playground waiting for the big reveal.  (Applied Geometry students not present at the on-site build who also helped are: Alissa Zimmer, Johammsonn Banks, Kiet Tran, Mohamed Ibrahim, Terrance (TJ) Walker, Shelby Stepherson.)

    The preschoolers arrived back in their classroom and had a quick lesson on calm bodies, quiet voices and listening ears to use the Literacy Loft.

    Liberty Post Stars Preschool Special Education teacher Melissa LePore, a Gates Chili graduate, said her students were very excited to begin using the Literacy Loft for the book area and the little nook underneath would be a house or a pretend play area. “Todd was able to do so much teaching through this and then gifting it so I can do teaching through it,” said LePore. “It’s wonderful.”

    “It made me feel good because it’s given to the community,” said tenth-grader Leilani. “It’s giving kids the joy of being able to have something new to read and play on.”

    Mikayla, also a tenth-grader, added, “I think a lot of kids should have a loft in their classroom so they can experience math.”

    Gates Chili Central School District - High School AP Physics Student Proposes Design Solution to NASA’s CLERE Design Challenge

    Gates Chili High School student Austin Susa plans to be a mechanical engineer and work in the space industry. He decided a good way to gain some experience for his future profession was to propose a solution to the NASA CLERE design challenge. 

    The NASA CLERE Design Challenge is a yearly joint educational program of NASA and Portland State University (PSU) enabling students in grades 8-12 to participate in microgravity (near weightlessness) research. Teams create their own experiment using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and each teams’ proposed solution is conducted twice using low-viscosity and quick-reacting silicon oil in PSU’s Dryden Drop Tower, where it will fall 22 meters and experience 2.1 seconds of microgravity.

    According to Austin the most difficult part of the challenge was analyzing the data. It took him about two-weeks to hand-draw a few different experimental ideas and then create the final drawing in CAD.  On Austin’s team was his sister, Shiana, a Gates Chili Middle School student. He also worked with his AP Physics teacher Mr. Eric Fooks.

    “The best part of the challenge was the trip to Seattle with my family and the chance to meet and present to the scientists,” said Austin. “I learned a lot about writing a professional lab report and how microgravity works in my Regents Physics class and in my tech class I learned how to use CAD.”

    Austin and Shiana are also known officially by their team name as the Marshmallow Astronauts. Shiana helped him analyzing the data frame by frame and helped write the report. She was also answered questions at the poster session in Seattle.

    “Austin developed his own hypothesis and then the designed channels to examine how the angle of a vessel affects capillary flow upwards in microgravity,” said Fooks.  “Afterwards, he performed the test and obtained data that he analyzed and reviewed.  Finally, he created a conclusion based on this data and analysis which he presented at a formal poster session with NASA officials.” 

    Throughout the course of the challenge, Austin discussed many physics principles including freefall, microgravity, capillary action, and surface tension with his teacher, who completed his undergraduate research at SUNY Geneseo.  They also worked on the format, standards, and expectations for formal scientific lab reports, posters, and presentations and called upon Mr. Fooks’ wife’s expertise as a scientist working at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester to prepare for the Questions and Answers session with the scientists.

    Austin is currently working on a new experiment so he can enter the challenge next fall and has already begun analyzing the data and writing his report.

    Gates Chili Central School District - A.R.T.S. Partners Brings Year-round Art into Classrooms

    A.R.T.S. Partners (Arts Reaching and Teaching in Schools Partners) is a partnership with the Gates Chili Central School District and Rochester Broadway Theatre League, which allows teachers to integrate the arts into their curriculum year round for all students in grades UPK-12. Topics and themes related to Touring Broadway shows are adapted into age-appropriate lessons for classroom learning and all students are fully immersed in the live theatre experience by attending touring Broadway productions at RBTL's Auditorium Theatre in conjunction with the program. Unique experiences will also occur depending on the show and the grade level, to further connect students into the magical world of Broadway. The program will ensure that Arts Education is given to students districtwide. ​
