Intergenerational play at Fairport elementary schools

First graders in Fairport elementary schools are creating friendships through play.

Through weekly 30-minute, one-on-one child-centered, intergenerational play and conversation meetings in a supervised group setting, children in participating classrooms at Brooks Hill, Dudley and Jefferson Avenue Elementary Schools meet with their Generation Two (G2) senior citizen friend and create these friendships while playing together.

The G2 project, which runs for two scheduled hours each week that school is in session from October to May, works to foster trust and relationships, according to Brooks Hill G2 Coordinator Kim Weick, also a retired Fairport elementary teacher.

“The relationships the children and adults make together, and the excitability of being able to play, is encouraging,” said Weick. “The students are bouncing down the hall to get to G2!”
