Learning How to Build and Maintain Morale

U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Donald Quinn, ERHS '75, enthusiastically credits his East Rochester roots and education for helping him throughout his long, distinguished military career.  "I feel truly blessed to have grown up in that small, wonderful village.  The sense of community was tangible and comforting, and the teamwork between parents and teachers was obvious and extremely beneficial," says Adm. Quinn, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in '79 and earned master's degrees in national security/strategic studies and general management.  "The discipline, drive, and curiosity my ER teachers cultivated in me when I was growing up have served me well to this day."  Adm. Quinn, who retired in January '14, adds, "Life at ER, however, involved much more than just schoolwork.  The social, athletic, and camaraderie aspects (for example, the annual tradition of Moving Up Day) taught me lessons I often used in carrier aviation squadrons and combat staffs.  Knowing how to build and maintain morale and esprit de corps -- loyalty, enthusiasm, and devotion -- enables you to do so much more with the people you're working with and leading."
