Mendon Center Elementary Students win National Grand-Prize for Scholastics’ Kids Are Authors Program

A team of fifth-grade students from Mendon Center Elementary won the grand prize for non-fiction in the Scholastic Book Fairs Kids Are Authors national book-writing contest. The Mendon Center students won the Scholastic award for their picture book, Through Jane’s Eyes: Lessons Learned from Dr. Jane Goodall, which they conceived, wrote, and illustrated earlier this year, when they were fourth graders. Their book will be published and sold at Scholastic Book Fairs in schools nationwide.

Scholastic Book Fairs representatives also awarded the students a commemorative medal and a framed award of merit certificate during a ceremony held on October 1, 2015 at the school. Included in the ceremony was a special video sent by Dr. Jane Goodall as congratulations. Mendon Center Elementary will receive 5,000 Scholastic Dollars (redeemable through the Scholastic Book Fairs Resource Catalog) and 100 copies of the published book. The young authors were able to autograph copies of their book following the ceremony.
